Life on a Lighthouse

Before GPS and automated beacons, lighthouses — and the people who ran them — were essential to safe navigation. But life as a lightkeeper was anything but ordinary. In this special feature, a historian, riverboat captain, and former lighthouse keepers share stories of the daily challenges, isolation, and dedication required to maintain the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse in its heyday. From freezing winters to round-the-clock maintenance, their accounts shed light on a way of life that’s now part of maritime history. 🎥 … Continue reading “Life on a Lighthouse”

Lighthouse Preservation: A Case Study in Reality Modeling

https://vimeo.com/523961697 Preserving historic structures requires precision — especially when they sit at the intersection of land and water. In this project, Aqua Survey supported engineers assessing the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse in Hudson, NY by producing a detailed 3D engineering-grade point cloud model. Using a combination of above-water lidar, photogrammetry, and subsurface sonar, our team created a seamless reality model that transitions smoothly from above to below the waterline. This comprehensive model gave engineers the spatial clarity needed to evaluate the lighthouse’s … Continue reading “Lighthouse Preservation: A Case Study in Reality Modeling”

An Unforgettable Friendship: Honoring Stan Waterman and His Underwater Realm

My wife has accused me of collecting interesting friends as a hobby.  I plead guilty as charged.  In 2000, I was tasked to find a keynote speaker for the Hudson Delaware Regional Chapter of SETAC (The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry) annual meeting.  I decided to invite longtime Princeton resident, Stan Waterman to speak.  I gave him a call.  He immediately said yes, with one caveat, he wanted me to come over to his home and have lunch with … Continue reading “An Unforgettable Friendship: Honoring Stan Waterman and His Underwater Realm”
