| Fate studies are sub-divided into three categories: physical and chemical properties; transformation; and transport processes. |

Physical/Chemical property testing includes basic properties of compounds such as water solubility, octanol/water partition coefficient, vapor pressure, hydrolysis, melting and boiling points, absorption, desorption, etc |

Transformation testing includes what is typically thought of when describing environmental fate studies. These are biodegradability tests and fall into three categories: ready biodegradability (mineralization to carbon dioxide and water); inherent biodegradability (can be biodegraded under optimal conditions) and simulation tests, which include Porous Pot and Continuous Activated Sludge tests. Simulation tests most directly represent field-type testing in the laboratory. |
