Fate studies are sub-divided into three categories: physical and chemical properties; transformation; and transport processes.

Physical/Chemical property testing includes basic properties of compounds such as water solubility, octanol/water partition coefficient, vapor pressure, hydrolysis, melting and boiling points, absorption, desorption, etc

Transformation testing includes what is typically thought of when describing environmental fate studies. These are biodegradability tests and fall into three categories: ready biodegradability (mineralization to carbon dioxide and water); inherent biodegradability (can be biodegraded under optimal conditions) and simulation tests, which include Porous Pot and Continuous Activated Sludge tests. Simulation tests most directly represent field-type testing in the laboratory.
